Simmons led Central Connecticut State in scoring during a week that saw the Blue Devils move closer to clinching the No. 2 seed in March’s NEC Tournament. The freshman point guard averaged 20.5 points, 4.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.0 steals over a pair of games. Simmons tallied 15 points, six assists, and four rebounds amidst some clutch play to send CCSU to a 71-69 NEC victory over Fairleigh Dickinson, which guaranteed the Blue Devils a winning season the very year after they won four games. With CCSU facing its largest deficit (9) and 6:59 left to play against the Knights, Simmons stepped up to spark an 11-0 run that put the Blue Devils in front by two. The rookie floor general sunk one of her five three pointers on the week to start the run before adding a jumper in the paint moments later. Simmons poured in a career-high 26 points and three steals earlier in the week against reclassifying NEC member Bryant. She shot 13-of-29 (.448) from the field over the two contests, including a 5-of-12 (.417) clip from downtown. Simmons celebrates her first career Choice Hotels weekly rookie honor, and third by a Blue Devil this season with Leanne Crockett accounting for the prior two.
