Wheeler’s offensive exploits have helped launch Mount St. Mary’s into the NEC title race and earned the Aussie his third Brine/NEC Rookie of the Week award this season, tying him for most in the conference. Wheeler scored twice in the Mount’s 3-1 road win over then-first place Long Island on Friday, then added an assist in a 2-0 triumph over St. Francis (NY) on Sunday that knocked the Terriers out of first place. He opened the scoring against LIU with a penalty kick in the 18th minute, then made it 2-0 on a header off a Vinnie Berry corner kick. Against St. Francis, Wheeler fed Eric Detzel, who found the bottom left corner of the net for the team’s second goal in a two minute span in the first half. The Newcastle, Australia native is third in the NEC with 10 goals and is tied for third with 22 points. Wheeler, the nation’s fourth-leading freshman goal scorer, is just the fourth player in the Mount’s Division I history to score 10 goals in a season and the first since Simon Hodkin posted 12 tallies in 1997, and his 22 points are the most since Hodkin registered 20 in 1999. The Mount (4-1 NEC) has now won two straight and five-of-six matches to move within one point of first place with 12 points.
