Hughes brings another NEC Player of the Week award home to Quinnipiac on the merit of his second consecutive top flight singles crown. A week after he won the No. 1 Flight singles title at the Bucknell Round Robin, Hughes won four straight matches at the Bobcats’ own Quinnipiac Invitational to claim the Flight A championship. The junior defeated Bucknell’s Ryan Sandburg in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, to reach the final where he rallied for a comeback victory, 6-7, 7-6, 10-3, over conference rival Kirill Kasyanov of Sacred Heart, who is coming off a 22-6 season at No. 1 singles. Hughes reached the final four by downing Boston University’s Jeff Chudacoff, 6-2, 6-4, before beating Sacred Heart’s Chris Ujkic, 6-1, 6-2, on the first day. Teaming with Brian Mikkelson, Hughes came two wins shy of conquering the No. 1 Flight doubles bracket.
