Wheeler is the recipient of his second Brine/NEC Rookie of the Week award of the season after recording a hat trick in the Mount’s 6-0 win over Robert Morris in its conference opener on Friday. He scored just 1:54 into the match off a pass by Vinnie Berry, then made it 2-0 after a cross from fellow freshman Kyle Patrick. Wheeler also scored on a header in the 61st minute for his eighth goal of the season. It marked the first hat trick by an NEC freshman since St. Francis (NY)’s John Sallhag tallied three times against La Salle on September 2, 2007 and the first by a Mount player since Simon Hodkin turned the trick on September 12, 1999. Wheeler, who ranks second in the NEC in goals and fourth in points (16), has helped Mount St. Mary’s open the league season 2-0 for the first time since 2005 and move back over .500 on the year with a 6-5 record. His eight goals are the most by a Mount player since the 2002 season.
