Claiming the starting tailback job in the off-season, Jones ran the ball 22 times for 210 yards and four touchdowns to power Sacred Heart past Assumption, 42-21, in the season opener. Jones’ eruption, which accounted for 171 second-half rushing yards, could not have been more timely for the Pioneers. Trailing 14-7 at halftime, Sacred Heart used touchdowns of five and 50 yards from Jones to pull ahead, 21-14, midway through the third quarter. Taking over for former 1,200-yard rusher Jason Payne, Jones averaged an impressive 9.4 yards per carry.
