After joining the team for the spring season, Stephens has made quite an impression in the short period of time since taking over the #1 singles position for the Knights, a spot formerly occupied by two-time NEC Player of the Year Daniel Wynne. Like Wynne, who graduated last spring, Stephens is an English import with a versatile game. He has already posted a 4-3 singles mark, including straight set victories over Army’s Phil Muhawi (6-1, 6-2), Lehigh’s Alfredo Fernandez-Concha (6-0, 6-2), NJIT’s Steve Erickson (6-4, 6-4) and Queens’ Wojciech Stuchlik (6-3, 6-4), who was the ninth ranked player in Division II at the conclusion of the fall season, according to the ITA. Stephens also dropped a three-set dual, 6-2, 5-7, 1-6, to Harvard’s Chris Clayton, who is 85th in the latest ITA rankings. Due in part to his contributions, the Knights improved to 6-4 in dual meet play in 2006-07 with wins over Lehigh, Queens and NJIT over the last month.
